When a high-pressure over Siberia had temperatures plummeting all over Europe, our anxiety levels went equally on the rise, but snow continued to avoid this part of Denmark. Until last week, when we finally woke up to the sight of a landscape covered in white. Just a little, enough to cover a Hovawart paw, but snow nonetheless.
We all rushed outside, only to stop abruptly as Viva came running back to us with a bleeding paw. One of her nails was hanging on a thread. We rushed to the emergency vet, who patched her up and gave us some antobiotics to prevent infection. The nail could be safed, Viva was lucky!
On return, Viva went right back to play some more. Although slippery due to the plastic bag wrapped around her brand new red sock.
We have been lucky before this winter. I found out we had run out of fuel and there was no heat. When we got the tank filled up again, the heaters refused to start and we had to call a repair-man. It took a little week before the heat was restored while the temperature outside was well below -20C/-4F.
But we have one of those traditional Scandinavian Masonry Heaters that runs on wood, and the whole family camped around it for a couple of days, enjoying the warmth and the company. We pretended to have our own little winter adventure, sipping on some Glögg and with two Hovawarts on guard to keep the trolls at bay.
It seems we have everything winter could bring covered now. We are ready for spring to arrive!

Our boys have never seen snow! We keep meaning to take a drive up north, but it never seems to happen!
ReplyDeleteSam
Boy would I love to see their faces when you do take that drive, make sure to have it all on camera :) I am repeatedly trying to convince the family to move further up north, so far to no avail.
DeleteOh Dog! I am so envious of your snow! All I've had this winter is rain! rain! rain!
ReplyDeleteThats awful, I hope you will get some snow soon, there is still time!
DeleteAw, poor Viva! I am glad she is ok! I love watching snow zoomies!
ReplyDeleteThanks, it was only a scare, she was not in pain at all. Otherwise when they DO loose the whole claw, thats is quite painful :(
DeleteScary about the lack of heat on such a wintery day. It has been unusually warm this year in Atlanta - in fact, our daffodils are out - a full month early!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your fire - loving your fireplace!
Dropping by on the blog hop today! (www.pet-peeves.org)
I must admit, living in a wooden house, the thought crossed my mind. Although we would never run out of wood :)
DeleteHey Kenzo and Viva, Jet here.
ReplyDeleteEven with the ouchie, you both looked liked you were having a blast in the snow. I don't know what snow is because I live in South Florida. I wear a long black fur coat, so, I bet I'd like that white snow stuff!
I am sure you'll love it :)
DeletePoor Viva! I'm glad she's okay. I love your heater!
ReplyDeleteThanks :) It was Viva's first harmless injury, we all were relieved it turned out to be nothing. We should use the heater more, it gives such a constant and lovely heat, its a great invention
DeleteMy Dad's oil furnace ran out of fuel a few years ago. I had to call in a repair man to prime the fuel lines again, NOT cheap!! Man, I haven't had Glogg in years!! I'm sure it made the cold a little more tolerable :D
ReplyDeleteArgh, my bank account is suffering, hope we get rid of the oil furnace soo. Loved you could remember the Glogg, we should soon gave a Glogg and pork crackling party :)
DeleteViva doesn't seem to notice that she has an injury :) So fun to watch them play!! Cali loves the snow!
ReplyDeleteShe was not in pain only annoyed the plastic bag didn't gave her a fair change with Kenzo. Would love to see Cali in the snow, can imagine she loves it !
DeleteSnow! So great for bounce around fun!
ReplyDeleteThat's the kind of thing Elka does in the snow; it's like her legs turn into springs and her back isn't solid (well, I guess it technically isn't, but you know what I mean)
Love it when they do that, and glad to hear Elka is a bouncer too :)
Delete-20C. I'm so glad I'm not where you are. That's all I have to say. Hope Viva gets better soon. Hanging on a thread sounds awful.
ReplyDeleteViva is ok, vet removed most of the nail, but claw still there. She is not even in pain :)
DeleteWe love the cold, but agree that -20C is stretching our limits too :)
I'm so glad Kenzo and Viva got to enjoy the snow and that Viva's injury didn't slow her down. I hope you guys enjoyed the coziness!
ReplyDeleteThanks, glad they didn't miss out on some snow this year :)
DeleteHow lovely! I would love a cozy fire and hanging out with my dogs.
ReplyDeletePoor Viva!!! Jasper had the same thing happen 2 years ago. He kept ripping off the bandage and bag. His nail couldn't heal fast enough!
Melf
Poor boy! I am lucky with that she ignores the bandage, it healed fast.
DeleteThat sounds so cozy! I'd love to have a wood-burning stove. These days it's a lot cheaper than oil. When we forgot to check last year, our oil tank went to empty as well and we had exactly the same problem. Fortunately, my husband was able to fix the furnace himself and get us up and running again!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely video. I hope Viva heals up soon. It's so cute her minor injury didn't prevent her from having fun!
You are welcome, and glad you liked it :)
DeleteThank you so much for sharing snow zoomies. We are practically snow free here and my tulips up up about 4 inches!
ReplyDeleteHoney has missed the snow but she starting barking and play bowing around the office when she saw Viva and Kenzo having such a good time.
